Everything is politicized — a short letter
Dear future historians: In the year 2018, this is what it feels like to be strangled.

The problem with the ever-reaching sphere of politics is that it makes potentially insightful people bury their heads. It is near-impossible to be an independent thinker in a world where you are labelled politically from the first moments you share your thoughts.
I went to a festival called ‘Roskilde’ in Denmark this year. It was the gig of the wonderful band First Aid Kit, where in-between songs, this beautiful duo would hold powerful speeches about empowering women and the systematic patriarchy. I’m not fundamentally against these ideas, but when politics take over the realm of entertainment, arts, sports, social media and just about everything we could think of — I have a problem.
For it is these aspects of life where people seek to escape all of it. Music to me is escapism in the most positive form. I get to be in an unconscious trance where no thoughts of future or past cross me. At it’s best, it creates a timeless zone of elevated sensation, akin to meditation.
When this moment is interrupted by politics, I want to bury my head to sand and just forget about it. I simply go to a concert with an intention. I don’t think neither you or me go to a concert to hear about politics, do we? This phenomena is not limited to this gig I went to see. It is simply omnipresent.
I believe it creates a real problem where people slowly begin to dislike the whole realm of politics. The polarization of politics is turning people into monsters, ready to become hastily angered by a different set of beliefs or opinions. It makes some of us a-political more than anything.
We have to remember, that no matter who is in charge of our countries, we are forced to share this world together and find common ground.
It is increasingly difficult for us to find peace in this realm of constant noise. If all the spectrum of life is fueled by politics, we lose sense of what’s really important to us.
We need to stop labeling other people based on their views so easily. If you read this letter with politically-tinted glasses, you might try to draw your conclusions. Just don’t.
