I agree that listening is a skill far undervalued in American culture, but why not go the next step and actually ask questions to show you’re engaged? Anyone can talk at another person, but for two or more people to connect, even on a topic one person is less familiar with, it seems important for that person to encourage the speaker too. Active listening isn’t just about not saying anything, it’s also about looking at the person who’s talking, not letting yourself get distracted by your surroundings or phone, and asking open-ended questions to keep the conversation going.
