Making Art is for Me, Making You Something is Work

It’s an interesting thing, whenever I tell someone what I do for a living (freelance design/brand strategy), they always proposition me with a new venture they’re working on and tell me it’s “right up my alley.”

No, it’s not.

It’s right up your alley.

A few years ago when I started my career, I always had a rule where I never talked about work. I didn’t care to talk about work, because work is not life. Work is your means to an end. I care about what you do in your off hours, what makes you essentially you, what motivates you, what your passions are.

I lost myself for a really long time because I decided to do drugs, and I am just now coming back to me, a painful 15 months later. During that time, all I could do was talk about work, and how to scheme to make money, and how I am gonna be rich and famous one day.

I’ve finally put my feet back down on Earth.

Now, I go back to not talking about work.

“What do you do for work?”
“It’s not important.”

Because, honestly, it’s not.

This is just a phase. So is the next one. And the next one.
