The Art of War, Visualized

The Sun Tzu Classic in Charts and Graphs

My newest book launches in March! It’s a reimagining of a globally beloved classic. It’s a project I’m incredibly proud of. And I am so excited that it’s almost ready to hit the shelves.

Here’s why I wrote it:

The Art of War, as most everybody knows, is that classic text attributed to the Chinese general Sun Tzu. And to be honest, it’s less about war than it is about problem solving. It’s a meta-metaphor. War is merely the stand-in noun for every hassle you’ve ever had in your life. And Sun Tzu gave us a brilliant game plan for resolving conflict: a game plan that I just had to visualize.

When I first read the text, I saw the short verses as captions for images that weren’t yet on the page; and reimagining this famous classic with charts and graphs was something I felt almost compelled to do — to create a modern, a visual translation that shakes off 2,500 years of dust.

And so I got out the paint and went to work. The result is the entire text of The Art of War, freshly illustrated to reflect modern conflict.

And here’s what people are saying about it:

“It’s the perfect meeting of minds. One, a general whose epigrammatic lessons on strategy offer timeless insight and wisdom. And the other, a visual thinker whose succinct diagrams and charts give readers a fresh way of looking at life’s challenges and opportunities. A Bronze Age/Information Age marriage of Sun Tzu and Jessica Hagy, The Art of War Visualized is an inspired mash-up, a work that completely reenergizes the perennial bestseller and makes it accessible to a new generation of students, entrepreneurs, business leaders, artists, seekers, lovers of games and game theory, and anyone else who knows the value of seeking guidance for the future in the teachings of the past.”

This is going to be fun. We’re taking preorders now, but hardcovers are going fast. And, if you preorder before Valentine’s Day, you can enter to win a very limited edition, signed and numbered 10x14 print.
