I didn’t know much about the history of Pepe the Frog as a symbol prior to its appearance in the 2016 election, but now I’m honestly more disturbed. If “a culture of hopelessness” is an accurate depiction of how Pepe was originally selected then I’m saddened by the desire to self associate with it and I can sadly understand how it evolved into the symbol it is today.
