#FastFoodHK : McDonald’s x Justice League’s Green Lantern Potato N’ Beef Burger
McDonald’s Hong Kong started selling the Justice League-tribute, limited-edition menus in recent months, with the Batman-inspired Diner Double Beef burger and Squeezy Cheesy Fries launched in October to kick off the campaign. It was followed up with the Superman-themed Honey Mustard Chicken burger and Potato Cheese Balls in November, although the seemingly-popular menu went under the radar just after a little bit over two weeks. This time, the fast food chain came up with a Green Lantern-inspired menu, the Potato N’ Beef burger and Potato Wedges.
After hearing good feedback from a few friends for the Superman menu, my curiosity led me to my closest McDonald’s today to try out the Honey Mustard burger. Alas, they have changed it just a few days ago with the Green Lantern menu. With my game face on, I decided to gun it and ordered the Potato N’ Beef burger.

I’ll admit this first hand, McDonald’s did a great job in promoting the menus with their Justice League mini figurines and decorations in their stores. The packaging for the burgers is one of its selling points, and it works.
My order came out at HKD 34.50 in a set with medium-sized french fries and soft drink. Add HKD 2.50 and you can swap the fries for the potato wedges. I didn’t opt to swap the fries as I have tried the wedges previously (it was offered for a limited time a few months back). I also asked for “no onion” as I don’t like the pungent taste.

The Potato N’ Beef burger is pretty much true to its name, a burger with a beef patty, hash-brown, bacon and some mystery sauce that tasted like onion/garlic-infused honey mustard. What I didn't know while snapping the photos is that there’s another sauce underneath the patty, which I suspect to be Hoisin sauce-inspired black pepper sauce. I didn't manage to capture the black pepper sauce as I only noticed them halfway through my burger.

IMHO, this is the epitome of fast food through and through. The hash-brown and bacon added the greasiness to the burger. I enjoyed the additional hash-brown (I do love my potatoes!), but at the same time, it made me full by the time I ate two-third of my burger. I struggled to finish the meal, even leaving my french fries almost untouched after the burger. I found the sauces particularly distracting, and the black pepper sauce tasted sweet, which turns me off greatly. The bread wasn't soggy, which is a plus, but it’s just a regular plain old burger bread. The bacon was a total meh, the soft texture reminded me more of a ham than bacon. As a whole package, the visual was not bad at all, although the taste, which was somewhat dissonant thanks to the confusing sauce, offered little to nothing to speak of.

It disturbs me a bit that there is virtually no vegetable of any kind in this burger, which makes it totally scream “unhealthy”. Then again, I wouldn't go to McDonald’s if I’m looking for a healthy treat.
Overall, I think the Justice League fans should try it just for the novelty of it, but I would not re-order this. As for the upcoming Flash-inspire menu, the jury is still out.
