There are many different styles of homes in Phoenix. Let’s take a closer look at one of the most popular ones: Spanish Mission.

Originating in California in the early 20th century, this style was inspired by the churches built by colonial Spanish missionaries. The main, stand-out feature of Spanish Mission homes is their plain, stucco or stone exterior. They also typically have a red tile roof, parapets, decorative railings, and carved stonework.

One of the main appeals of a Spanish Mission home is the balancing of the outdoors and indoors. Many houses have an adjoining alfresco area either in courtyard form, or as a loggia running along the side of the house. Another important aspect of a Spanish Mission home is the open plan kitchen/dining/living area.

Stucco walls and cool, shaded interiors make Spanish Mission style homes best suited for warmer climates, which is why they’re typically found in Phoenix and all over Arizona (plus other areas of the Southwest, California, and Florida).

Spanish Mission homes are not perfect, however. Stucco can cause problems with water leakage and deterioration due to the heat and cracking that comes along with age. Tile roofs can also be subject to leakage in spots where different parts of the roof come together. If the home is older, new plumbing and electrical wiring may be necessary.

Hardwood floors are another feature of many Spanish Mission homes, and though the look is lovely, finishes may need to be stripped and replaced to eliminate blemishes.

With their ornate style, red tile roofs, and beautiful open floor plans, it’s easy to understand why Spanish Mission homes can be found all over Phoenix.
