Winning the Mental Health Game

Life is a challenge, so we might as well think of it as a game. In any game, you can win or lose. Winning is way better than losing. I’m a winner. I prefer to win. In the game of mental health, I shoot for the win everyday. I wake up in the morning full of anticipation and go to bed with a smile at night knowing I made the most of the day. How do I do it? I practice these 4 super simple but effective goals.

  1. Be the First to Initiate the Conversation — Always make sure you are the first to say “Good morning”. “Hi”, “Hello”. Say those words with a beaming smile. Do respect other people’s personal space by gauging how they respond to your greetings. If they are forthcoming, continue the conversation. If they reply in a manner that they want to be left alone, leave them alone.
  2. Be Kind and Helpful — Always look for opportunities to help others. A motorist needs to get into your line? Let them have the way. Some needs a helping hand? Offer yours.
  3. Practice Gratitude, Aloud — Always appreciate the little things others do for you, aloud. Let them know you are thankful.
  4. Take a Walk, without your Phone — This is my favorite. Most of the time we are wired with our gadgets in a sitting position. Walking is a release from it all and a chance to truly umplug. Instead, hear the wind talk to you. Enjoy the fresh air as nature intended. Stretch your body. Enjoy the walk. Become the walk.

These are the 4 main goals I seek to practice every day. If 4 is not enough, I have a list of 10 mental health goals for you.
