Merry Christmas!

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree 2014. I stopped by after work the day after the tree was lit.
And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.…

I hope your 2014 has been healthy and joyful. My year has been full of loving life and working hard. Since moving to New York City in July 2012, I have been on a journey to make this chaotic, beautiful, messy city into my home. In 2014 it happened. Wonderful friends, a few hobbies, and spectacular colleagues are the best part of my life. Take a look at a few of my favorite moments of the past year.

I love staying in touch with friends! Find me on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. Email me at jessie.marie.newman@gmail.com or call/text 347.740.0055. You can also find me wondering around my precious neighborhood of Astoria, NY.

My day job

I spend my days (and some early mornings and nights ☺) at Essence Digital, solving some of the world’s digital marketing challenges. Luckily I have worked on our Google client team since day one, championing cutting-edge, genuine brands and working with brilliant clients. My colleagues make the day-to-day fun and exciting. We truly operate as a family, and I love that we are a part of each others lives in and out of the office. One of the year’s highlights was a company offsite in Austin, Texas! #essenceyall

Travel

When I am not at work, I am either traveling or planning my next trip. I am incredibly blessed with so many friends all over the world to visit and adventurous travel partners to go with me!

In 2014 I took day trips to Cold Spring, New York for hiking and antiquing, Mountain Creek, New Jersey for skiing, Beacon, New York to visit Dia:Beacon Modern Art Gallery, Modena, New York for apple picking, and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to explore Amish country.

Hiking in the Hudson Valley on MLK Day (left) and a ski trip to New Jersey with my colleagues (right). I am getting so much better at skiing!
Fall trip upstate to pick apples in the rain.
Spent a gorgeous fall day in Lancaster County, PA running around the country. When grass is hard to come by at home, corn fields are a novelty.

Weekend trips included Nashville and Louisville to visit friends Rachel and Erin, Princeton, NJ, Memorial Day in Chicago with Libbi and Chelsea, Long Island for a Church women’s retreat, Ithaca, NY with Judith and Rebecca for Finger Lake’s Wine Festival, Kansas City for Courtney Perkins (now Betts) Wedding, Labor Day in Portland, Maine, Niagara Falls and Toronto, Canada with Aubrey and Daniella to see Lecrae in concert and visit Marion and Alex.

Libbi and I (right) went to a Craft Beer Festival and a rooftop Memorial Day party. We met up with Chelsea (left) for brunch too!
Spent a weekend in the Ithaca, New York, drinking wine, visiting the Farmer’s Market and hiking around peaceful waterfalls.
In August, Courtney Perkins Betts got married! I loved celebrating her special day with my long-time friends Sarah Barlow Broughton and Libbi Gordon. Sarah, Courtney and I have known each other since we were babies. We recently met Libbi in middle school.
In front of Portland Headlight in Maine. I had the best weekend eating tons of lobster, visiting lighthouses and going shopping at the L.L. Bean Flagship store.

Saw Niagara Falls from both the US and Canadian sides! It was magnificent and powerful. My friends Daniella, Aubrey and I drove from NYC to Toronto, Canada and back in three days. It was my first time in Canada.

In October I went on a two week adventure to London and Oxford, England and Barcelona, Madrid and Toledo, Spain. In London I saw a few West End shows and connected with friends Anna, Sabrina, Johnny, Zeta sisters abroad and colleagues in our UK office. It was glorious to be back in London, a city I once called home! I still love this place and want to move back sometime in the future.

Spent six days in London and pretended to be a tourist again. The sun came out to greet me.
Loved Barcelona, Spain! A vibrant city full of unique, colorful character. Barcelona Harbor (left), on the roof of Gaudi’s Casa Batllo (center) and the Sagrada Familia (right).

In Spain, I toured Barcelona solo, participating in an outstanding EatWith dinner, explored markets, the Sagrada Familia and Gaudi houses. Last stop was Madrid which included a day trip to Toledo. In Madrid, I feel in love with its charming streets and stately architecture. I was lucky to stay with a wonderful friend, Erin, who teaches in Madrid. The weather in Spain was unreal—a whole week of 75–85F and sunny. Obviously, this won’t be my last time in Spain!

Me and Erin (Zeta sister from William Jewell) in Madrid (upper left). I love catching up with friends anywhere they live. Me in Puerta del Sol by the famous bear statue (upper center). I spent over half a day wondering around the breathtaking Retiro Park (upper right). Stunning Spanish sunset (center left) and views of the ancient town of Toledo (center and lower right). A selfie in Toledo! I was lost all day wondering around this famous town’s winding streets.

Free time

While I am in New York City, I spend my free time singing with the Women’s Ensemble of the Young New Yorker’s Chorus. In March we wrote and produced a sold-out cabaret. It is fabulous to participate in a musical ensemble and connect with fellow choir geeks.

One of the best things about living in NYC is access to some of the world’s best theatre. In 2014 I saw 23 different Broadway shows (and counting!).

A few times a week I go spinning and do Pilates on the weekends. In between all this, I host my church (Trinity Grace Queens) women’s small group at my apartment and love entertaining and cooking meals for Astoria (my neighborhood) friends.

I save all my Playbills (saw both Twelfe Night and The Richard the Third but they had the same Playbill—upper right)! I absolutely loved The Glass Menagerie, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Beautiful, Les Miserables, and If/Then. One highlight of the season was seeing my good friend Lauren as a dancer in Wicked on Broadway. Congrats Lauren! In addition to this I saw a handful of Off-Broadway shows that were also wonderful.

Family

My family is so important to me, and despite being far apart, we stay in close communication. Mom and my sister, Mary Grace, 17, spent some of their Spring Break in NYC, and I got to play tour guide. Our favorite experiences were visiting the Today show, taking a walking Greenwich Village foodie tour and a cooking class.

NYC is best when shared. Mom and MG spent a cold spring break exploring the City with me.

My sister Rachel, 23, graduated from University of Missouri in May and I spent the weekend in Columbia, Missouri celebrating Rachel’s many accomplishments. I am so proud of her! It is clear her legacy at Mizzou will live well past her four years of undergrad. This fall Rachel started graduate school at MU, studying Higher Education Administration and Leadership.

Congratulations Rachel!

For the first time in over three years, I visited Jefferson City for a weekend without any agenda. It was so luxerious to be at home without anything to do other than enjoy my family’s company. Can’t wait to do it again!

Thanks for reading! I love you all and owe so much of my happiness to your friendships and encouragement. If you are ever in NYC, contact me! I would love to see you.

On of my favorite Sundays on record was the Jazz Age Party at Governor’s Island. Everyone dressed up in their 1920s best, and we pretended we walked straight out of the Great Gatsby.

Wishing you a 2015 filled with love, joy and adventure!

Love always, Jessie
