Helen, I don’t think you’re wrong but I don’t think you capture how completely *awful* reporting can be for a woman by focusing only on public perception. Retaliation is real and often subtle and difficult to prove. Even if the public takes the report seriously that doesn’t change how detrimental this can be to a woman in her job — is her boss offended she brought this up? Will he be open to feedback or will this subtly damage their relationship? Many women who have worked in tech for years has developed a behavior of keeping their heads down that extends to even bringing up issues with their boss and HR. It’s not just public perception it’s the systemic treatment and gaslighting that occurs that can be absolutely devastating and before we change the attitude on that, women will continue to hesitate to go public.
