Why Do “Women in Tech” Communities thrive, while Women in Tech don’t?
Ellen Chisa

The idea of ‘emotional labor’ absolutely resonated with me. I’ve been trying to regularly go to Products That Count talks in SF (founded by a woman — SC Moatti) and was shocked at how often there would be subtle comments that made me feel the need to prove myself (e.g. “I assume you’re not a technical PM”). Women-only groups for me felt like a breathe of fresh air where I could feel not crazy for the feeling of exhaustion other environments can prompt in me. What’s more, they’ve given me strength to assert myself. Even having the freedom to admit that hey, sometimes this shit is exhausting just helps me go back at it knowing that the feelings I have are totally valid.
