As for your comment about US credit cards not working on the NSB web site, there seems to be a work-around now that eliminates the need to call the train company in Norway.
I tried to make a reservation last night, and my VISA card returned an error message as you stated. However, I noticed they now permit payment using PayPal. I decided to give that a try using the very same VISA account, and it worked fine. So, calling them no longer seems to be necessary if you use PayPal. There is no cost for using PayPal.
I then downloaded the NSB app to my iPhone and used the confirmation code I was emailed by NSB to download the reservations to my phone. The whole process went smoothly and was easy to do.
