I went to the cinema with great expectations. Simply because the first “Guardians” film is wonderful. And the second one is made by the same director James Gunn with the same team of actors. Looking at the sequel, I can say with certainty: it did not disgrace the original. But can it be considered equal to it or even better?

The sequel of “Guardians” is made at the same high level as the first film. It is entertaining and funny. The sequel is even funnier at some points. There’s everything that should be in the movie about Star-Lord and his friends. A lot of humour, space battles, breathtaking action scenes and music from the 70s. And well, of course, the cameo of Sten Lee.

There is some lack of novelty in the new film. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is not a revolutionary sequel like Terminator 2: Judgment Day or Aliens. It is another part of the adventure in the already familiar style. It can be compared with a new episode of the series, which is no better and no worse than the previous one. While the original movie of James Gunn was a terrific surprise. Four years ago, no one knew what to expect from the film about little-known Marvel heroes like a talking raccoon and not quite talking tree. But the second “Guardians” immediately give exactly what is expected of it. This, in any case, can not be considered as a shortcoming. This time there was no element of a surprise, but we got everything we wanted.

James Gunn did not spoof when he said that the main theme in the film would be the theme of the family. It catches the eye and it concerns not only Star-Lord but also each of the guardians. The number of characters in the sequel has increased. The cast was joined by such stars as Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, and David Hasselhoff flashed in another cameo. The role of Ravager named Kraglin was performed by the brother of the director Sean Gunn. Pom Klementieff played a new character called Mantis. Under the layer of the make-up, I managed to recognize the actress Elizabeth Debicki, whom I remember from the excellent TV series The Night Manager. Debicki plays Ayesha the leader of the Sovereign people.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, there is no magic spark of novelty, which caused delight in the first movie. Even so, this is a competent continuation. The scale has grown, the characters of the heroes are revealed better, and the memorable scenes would be enough for several more films. New “Guardians” is a “must watch” great entertaining comedy for fans of superheroes and space opera subgenre.
