My Friend, the King

I often catch light
lynching the mob across from me.
In tiny spurts of honks that would
wrap a jellyfish around one's foot,
my distant friendships
are always whipping me
with an sudden joy
from their instant eradication.

"Where in the study
have you found the cockroaches,
Mam?"
She doesn't answer
but the forethought
lays loose from her jaw
and I am told, just then,
that your mother has passed away
when there was nothing I could do
to comfort you from
the distance we'd placed.

Sleep tight, my nervous King of Quotes.
We've been sick & hollowed since
the conception of such mountaintops.
