WordPress has got a new shiny Desktop App. And other updates. More details here.

Wordpress has been the long time competitor in the blogging sphere. If you look at the market share, you can see that it holds the CMS market share by its neck and has a whooping 61% of the entire CMS industry.

Competition makes the product evolve better and better

But Wordpress has seen a lot of new competitors in the market like Medium and others. So what has Automattic has done to keep its blogging platform competing with its competitors?

Wordpress has currently released a new update called Calypso and it has huge updates that will make wordpress (your most loved product) even more fascinating.

Right now with the calypso’s updates, the product has undergone major changes. What are the updates to the end-user or the benefits that you will gain because of this?

  1. Opensourced codebase

Now you can find the entire codebase for the calypso version of wordpress in github. Here’s the link: https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso. Because of this, you can fork and make your own changes as long as you stick to the opensource license GPL v2.

2. New Mac desktop app

You can also download a new mac app that sits in your icon tray and edit your posts from your comfort of the desktop rather than using the site on the web. This makes it easier for news writers and other journalists to churn out more content without opening up multiple browser tabs.

3. Mobile Friendly UI

The entire UI has been rewritten using Javascript and it is now a single page application. The UI has been optimized for the mobile users which has been on the rise and thus enables mobile users to write content without much fuss. This is one of the features of the calypso update that enables it to compete with newcomers like Medium etc.

4. Distributed Core and UI

Though this point might go well with technical readers, the entire stack of the wordpress has been split into wordpress core (api service) and UI. So the rest of the app talks to the core using APIs and keeps it separated from the core. The benefits? A much better and stable architecture that will help the company to have more useful updates in the coming future. Good work, Automattic (the company behind wordpress).

You should at this point realize that wordpress has a total share of 21% of the entire website on the internet.

Because of this particular update, the company will benefit immensely and mostly it will be the users that will get the greater benefit. Keep your ears open to get more updates as I suppose the wordpress might be receiving in the coming days.
