How I Landed My First Copywriting Client in Less Than 30 Days
It’s much simpler than you think.
TBH I wasn’t expecting success this quickly. In all actuality it kinda just fell in my lap.
But as with most success stories, there’s a mindset and specific state of actions that are in place before the proverbial “coincidental success” happens. And that’s what I want to share today.
I started writing back in 2017 but in order to make money from my writing I had two hurdles to face: personal development and babies!
I had my first child in 2018 and am now a proud mama of 3 kiddos under 5.
Adjusting to this new season of life (as well as moving, changing jobs, the pandemic, etc…) was challenging, leaving my writing on the back burner.
But what I’d say had an even greater limitation on my writing back then was my mindset. I was too anxious and emotional to handle the demands of entrepreneurship back then.
*** I go into more details about these emotional barriers in Part One of me ebook “How to Land Your First Client As a Freelance Copywriter.”
And TBH, I have a really hard time producing work just for fun. I get having a hobby. I read, workout, journal, etc. just for fun. But crafting words for the Internet takes work and I like to know my work will have a good ROI.
So let’s get to the point. The first thing I did to start my copywriting business was look at which class/program I wanted to invest in to help launch my business.
Because I was coming from a completely different background (I’m a nurse by trade) making this investment was nonnegotiable.
There are so many programs to choose from, how do you know what’s right for you?
What I did was choose the program that would give me the knowledge I sought AND provide tangible access with the course instructor, i.e. I went with the program that was closest in my network.
Because at the end of the day when it comes to business it’s not about what you know but how you know.
This one decision turned out to be the best decision because my first client unexpectedly was my course instructor.
After finishing her course, about two weeks later she just so happened to land an opportunity to expand her business and needed support. So she reached out to me for support.
Which leads me to my next action towards success: be active and engaged in your course/program, writing groups, etc. Aka, show up.
Why did my course instructor reach out to me? She had many other options to choose from.
She noted admiration for my work ethic.
And how was she able to see my work ethic?
I contributed questions and dialogue in our group chat. I shared my goals, asked for feedback, checked in with other writers, and shared free resources I was using to continue to further my education in copywriting
I wasn’t looking or expecting a job right away but because I was present, when the opportunity presented itself, I was at the forefront of her mind.
And that is the essense of good marketing; the ability to stay at the forefront of someone’s mind.
My encouragement to you is to show up where you are. Be ready for the opportunity you cannot see coming.
Sometimes you will feel like giving up, just slow down and stay consistent.
Sometimes the rejection is more crushing than you like, congrats you’re one step closer to a yes.
Sometimes your mind will tell you you’re an imposter, take heart every successful entrepreneur has felt the same way.
If you keep going, you simply cannot fail.
