Fantastic article, James Lillin. I would add that all good Catholics, not just those in positions of power, must take a stand for common decency and morality.

If enough members of congregations and enough simple priests and nuns stood up and demanded change, change would have to happen.

The Catholic Church continues to kill people in Africa because ordinary Catholics let the Church get away with it.

Ordinary Catholics are complicit with evil.

Ordinary Catholics (and Mormons and Evangelical Christians) are also complicit with evil when they won’t take a stand against institutional homophobia and sexism.

Religious institutions so often get away with hurting innocent people, because members of the institutions won’t fight for what they personally know is right.

A huge majority of of American Catholics disapproves of the Church’s policies in Africa. Yet this same huge majority continues to troop to Church every Sunday and put money in the baskets.

All I can say to that is, “What the fuck, over?”
