Who I Am: Hello! I’m Maggie and I’m a senior computer science major at ND originally from Staten Island, NY.
Interests: My interests began in graphic design in high school and also a bit of coding. Lately I am interested in interface design and specifically how to make it more intuitive, practical and simpler for users. I’m taking a design class this semester, so I’m hoping that will be especially engaging! I am also still interested in graphic design on the side. I have an Etsy shop (www.bannerbooth.etsy.com) where I pursue this interest by creating custom logos and branding for fellow Etsy shop owners. Lastly, I love iOS app development. I’ve developed 3 apps (all financial calculators for NYC pensions) and am currently working on a new app that focuses on communication and memories.
Why I’m studying computer science: I believe that every industry has the potential to be transformed even more by technology. I find it inspiring and really cool that knowing how to code can have such a far-reaching effect.
What I hope to get out of the class: I hope to learn specifically how to identify and overcome any moral dilemmas I may encounter while coding in a professional environment in the future. I’m also curious about idea protection and the legal issues surrounding IP.
Pressing moral issues surrounding computer science: I think one of the general issues is the impact of knowing how to create potentially destructive pieces of technology that may be used for purposes that aren’t necessarily morally correct. I’d be interested in discussing specific instances of how developers were involved in a project that was used to create a weapon for the military or something along those lines.
