I think one of the reasons white people like me wonder why race is brought into an issue that didn’t seem race-related at all is highlighted by the Lena Dunham story. If I didn’t know who Drake, Odell Beckham, and Lena Dunham were, I wouldn’t have had any idea what race they were by reading Dunham’s comments. My impression would have been that she was somewhat crude with her language and willingness to share what, at best, should have been kept private. But her comments don’t have anything racial in them (at least as far as I can see). If you replaced her name with Leslie Jones and Drake and Beckham with Eminem and Edelman I don’t think anyone would have thought the comments were racist.
