Personally I think you could stop there and be quite accurate.

What would be helpful is if we could find some cultural control group. As it stands, as reasonably as an atheist can articulate the non-faith, it is hard to examine atheism as anything but a _response_ to faith. The control group would be a culture that developed without a belief in a deity of somesort. There has to be something that can show how religion is imposed, not our natural state, so to speak.
