“Creative” Doesn’t Cut It

Thanks to Kant, what has to happen is a reconciliation of the bifurcated humanity — reason vs emotion, rational vs irrational. As long as art is seen as irrational, it will continue to only be justifiable in Benthamite utilitarian terms.

Arts education has to be seen as solving reasonable issues. We have to explain that one studies art in grade school not to become a great artist any more than studying math or other sciences is to become the next Einstein. Both admirable outcomes, but not the purpose of education.

We have to get art back into people’s hands, not just as viewers and audience, but as makers.
