No, Obamacare Isn’t Ruining Insurance Companies

There is a fundamental mistake here; companies that are profitable on the whole will still insist that each line of business and each product be profitable. If a product is not profitable, the company will either try to raise the price, reduce the expense, or discontinue the product — -even if all other lines are profitable.

If a grocery store is profitable and finds it loses money on every bag of charcoal it sells, it will become more profitable by discontinuing the sale of charcoal. We cannot and should not force it to keep selling charcoal.

Likewise one cannot force the insurers to lose money selling Obamacare. We must provide subsidies or let them raise prices.
