Open Letter to the Thief Who Stole My Laptop
Dear Petty Criminal Who Robbed Me,
Why did you take my bag? Why did you think it a good idea to steal a bag that held my laptop, a book, some business cards, a pair of sunglasses, and a pair of earbuds?
The bag meant a lot to me, it was a gift from a friend and reminded me of her. It was a really nice thing someone did for me, and you took that away.
The book was “How boat things work”, I was reading it to learn about marine engines, are you interested in marine engines or boats? I would have been happy to talk to you about them. Maybe you could have just talked to me instead.
Are you happy with the sunglasses? A pair of old Ray Ban aviators with a crack in the right lens. You can’t really sell them, or maybe you can, but for what - a few measly bucks?
I guess one of the better things you stole were the Apple Earbuds, because you could actually get a use out of them.
Of course, my laptop, how could this have slipped my mind, the one I immediately locked once you took my bag. Maybe you are smart enough not to connect it to the internet, maybe. Maybe you went ahead and made a clean install, maybe. Maybe I’m also looking on Craigslist and eBay for someone selling a 2012 MBP w/ 16GB RAM, and a 512MB HDD. Maybe.
But I want you to know that the machine meant a lot to me. It wasn’t just a laptop, it was something my dad bought me when things were really tough financially for me, it reminded me of his love and his support, and you took that.🖕
The programs, the data, all that’s backed up, but the sentiment, you stole, and that’s what hurts. But hey, maybe you need the money, maybe you’ve got a family, and they don’t have food, maybe. If that’s the case, I wish you well, and hope things turn around for you.
But if you steal because it’s how you make your living, I feel sorry for you, you create hurt for those you rob, and I can only hope that one day you will empathize with them and make up for the pain you’ve caused.
