In my experience the first thing that happens before the top people abandon a failing company is that they start to shove the underlings out the door. I made it through 3 rounds of layoffs at a bubble tech company while executives carefully massaged their stock options. Either leaving for “new opportunities” forcing others out or openly lying at company meetings about our “bright future.”

By the time I left under my own power, before the inevitable next round of layoffs I saw coming, almost no one above me who I’d originally started with was still left.
