Yesterday, I was presented with the amazing opportunity to attend a fireside chat with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. As I reflect on the insightful dialogue, here are 3 valuable lessons learned from the discussion:

1. Dream Big, Embrace Ambition and Persist Through Misunderstanding:

The first lesson started off with the classic Y-combinator’s motto, “Make something people want”. Sounds simple, right? But there’s way more to it. Let your big ideas fill the room, make some noise, and trust the process of making things happen. The world leans into solutions — if you nail it, you’ve got your golden ticket to the global market. So, when you’re up to your neck in problem-solving, think bigger, think worldwide. Now, let’s talk about OpenAI. They are a living proof of relentless ambition. It took them four and a half years to create their first product, and another two years to perfect it. The journey of innovation is seldom a smooth one. Yet, as long as your trajectory is upward and your internal team continues to develop, no obstacle is too big.

2. Value the Power of a Small, Focused Team:

Drawn from Altman’s own journey in Y-Combinator and OpenAI, he preaches about small, focused, and talent-dense teams. Achieving great things with a smaller team is not a matter of resources but not settling for mediocrity. Your team should be a crew of rockstars, each excelling in their domains and collectively contributing to the overall vision of the organisation.

3. Embrace the Unpredictability of Technological Evolution:

Artificial Intelligence may be great at task completion, but it can’t replicate the human factor that transforms an idea from 0 to 1. As technology evolves, it enhances our capabilities and expands our horizon of productivity. However, the ability to be creative, resilient, and adaptive remains our unique strength. In the coming times, the pace of change will advance like never before. As such, the most crucial skills will be an insatiable curiosity, adaptability, and continuous learning. So, as we step into a future where ‘doing’ will be increasingly taken over by AI, we must elevate our ‘thinking’ and remain adaptive, focusing more on solving what others need.

In closing, what truly matters in the journey of innovation is the continuous and rapid progress accompanied by the growth and development of your team. If you’re interested inVCs, Tech, or start-ups feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn, always down for a new chat!
