You make some excellent points here, but ux has always been about understanding what the user needs to do in context. The context of the business, the context of their tasks, the context of their environment. Slick design has always been just that. Sometimes slick design is called for, but other times it’s simple design. A lot of people believe the design is the way things look and not the way things work. In the end the bottom line credo of ux is this: the user needs to do something where they are at the moment. Either you are going to make it easier for them to do this or you are not. As far as the Golden Age, I am working in Enterprise ux and I can assure you that there is an enormous amount of c-level executives who believe that this is all about interfaces that look cool. They have no idea how much money they burn by allowing developers and clients to lead development efforts with no guidance of the user in context. When you add in the marketing people you wind up with a huge mess.
