My wife has taken up crochet. It gives her a creative outlet, but not one that actually requires minute-by-minute decisions. She can do it as a central task or while watching TV (unless it’s a scary scene, in which case the hands go in the lap because: dropped stitches when something jumps out of the darkness). She has total control of the yarn, the colors, the stitches, the size… And it gives her a feeling of actually accomplishing something beyond herself, because she creates “lapghans” that her sister takes to nursing homes.
