Yes and no. The basic service will still be free; if you want the “enhanced service” (or expanded service or premium service or whatever — you know, that thing we used to just call an “upgrade,” and took for granted as happening naturally) then you pay the $5/month Enhanced Services subscription. We’ve already seen this in SaaS (my todo list software is free, but I pay more because I also want my data synced between all my devices) and IaaS (Dropbox, etc.).

Don’t like it? Get a dumb thermostat. But the next time you get home early from vacation and the house is a sweat box because the thermostat is still on “vacation hold” and you couldn’t cut in the a/c on the drive home…
