As you explore all of Edinburgh’s wonderful cultural and historic attractions, don’t forget to enjoy meals at some of the city’s great restaurants!

Experiencing a new country and culture through their food is one of my favorite ways to get to know a new place, and in Edinburgh your taste buds will be rewarded with some of the finest fare you’ll fund anywhere in the UK.

Arrive in Edinburgh with this list of 7 fabulous restaurants, and ask a few locals which of them they prefer. It’s fun to book your hotel and transportation in advance, but leave space in your travel schedule for a few surprises (like where you’ll dine) for spur-of-the-moment decisions

Now let’s introduce you to a few of Edinburgh’s most popular eating spots!

1. The Stockbridge Restaurant

If you enjoy wonderfully fresh game, fish, and produce in your dishes, check out the Stockbridge Restaurant. This popular Edinburgh restaurant has both a set and a la carte menu. You’ll also want to try out samples from the cheese board, which is provided by I.J. Mellis, the most prominent cheesemonger in Scotland.

2. Fishers in the City

Fishers in the City is housed in a converted warehouse in the New Town, on Thistle Street. Seriously consider trying the fish and chips with delicious Belhaven Beer batter. This is a quintessentially Scottish dish you’re sure to enjoy. There’s a plethora of Scottish-caught seafood available here.

3. The Kitchin

The Kitchin is found in a converted warehouse. It is situated on the Leith waterfront. You can drive yourself there, or take a taxi. You’ll appreciate the atmosphere, which seems to combine the modern and traditional. The chef, Tom Kitchin, was trained in the classical French way. This makes him have a unique take on traditional Scottish dishes and contemporary British food.

4. Henderson’s of Edinburgh

Henderson’s of Edinburgh is situated in the city’s New Town. If you’re a vegetarian, this is a place you’ll want to visit. You’ll get the chance to taste vegetarian versions of traditional Scottish dishes. This restaurant also houses the Janet and Mac Gallery, making a great spot for art enthusiasts. Check out the live jazz available in the evenings, as well.

5. Monteiths

Especially popular with locals, Monteiths is situated near St. Giles Cathedral. The restaurant has a terrace that you’ll appreciate if the weather is pleasant. A bread board, including homemade butter, is served there. Monteiths is a wonderful place to enjoy a lunch on Sundays.

6. Angels with Bagpipes

Angels with Bagpipes is a fascinating local restaurant housed in a 17th-century building in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Even though the building is hundreds of years old, the restaurant’s décor and food is distinctly modern. Angels with Bagpipes offers fun cocktails, such as the Heather Honey Julep (which includes heather honey, mint, Drambuie, and Singleton whiskey).

7. Wedgwood

Wedgwood is a popular Edinburgh restaurant where you can enjoy classic Scottish dishes with interesting Asian touches. There are a variety of delicious options on the menu here. For dessert, try Wedgewood’s “very sticky” toffee pudding.
