Two comments. First, Wuala once tried to use the free space of subscriber’s computers and award them free space. Eventually, they stopped doing this. Maybe the technology was too difficult, or maybe the economics didn’t work.
Second, the price for storage is 1.5 cent per GB per month, and 5 cents per GB for retrieval. This is actually pretty high. Dropbox, for instance, does not charge for retrieval at all.
Third (of two comments), it is actually very hard to write a file retrieval system. Most major commercial products have severe bugs that remain outstanding for months or years. It is hard to see how a Github based project with one anonymous developer will do better.
