Becoming An Agave Expert

At the time of starting this blog, I have 90 tequilas to go, and I have only written notes on 5 of those agave delicacies. As I write this intro, I am drinking Milagro. It is the tequila that sparked my curiosity… at first. It later became about mezcal, but I will leave that delicious journey for another time.
Bear in mind, I am not writer. I have a BA in Physics and a Masters in Computer Science. I stayed away from any class that required writing like it was the plague. My hope is to understand how to describe tequila better. At first it may seem like nonsense. I think if you taste the tequila, you will understand where I am coming from in my descriptions.
Why 100 tequilas? Burro Bar — a restaurant in Boston — has a competition, where if you drink 100 of their tequilas you get a trip to Cancun. Why wouldn’t I try to accomplish this? At the same time, I do want to get to know what I am drinking and I want to write about the smell, taste, and my experience.
A couple of months ago my best friend and I went to a Donna in Brooklyn. We ran a large tab on just tasting top shelf mezcal and tequilas. While Milagro sparked a desire for me to understand tequila, this experience solidified my urge to find the best tequila.
I have 3 goals in mind.
- Become somewhat of an expert (between my friends and I) on tequila. I want to be able to know what someone’s mood is and say “hey you know what? this tequila will be best for you right now.”
- Learn from this experience. I want to have fun and really invest in this hobby.
- Go to Cancun! I have never been, but if this journey to taste 100 tequilas will get me there for ‘free’ then I’ll take it!
Hopefully you look forward to reading my blog. I will normally try a Tequlia, Reposado, and Anejo of every brand I taste and write about my experience.
Happy Tasting!
