Annie, as you have likely surmised, this is his most recent and provocative. I have most of his works, but my first of his was Zealot, a history of the life and times of Christ, the real man. That was a massive eye-opener. What that did was place context around the flawed, imperfect guy who was later elevated to God-man, and it also explained those who gathered around him. The fantasy fairy tales that we have been sold and told largely have no basis in reality. If you are a fan of George Carlin and I am, he does a piece on the Ten Commandments which is a laff riot. One of his observations is that the use of TEN (as opposed to eleven or nine) was a “marketing effort.” Well, to be honest, so is religion. It’s all marketing and sales. We are sold what we’ll suck down our gullets. The ancient so-called pagans had their holidays co-opted to include Christian holidays so that they could be convinced to believe (they didn’t, they just included yet another deity). Perhaps what I found most hilarious was the material on St. Peter who was a breathtakingly arrogant SOB who in some ways thought himself better than Christ. On this cretin the Catholic Church was founded- an institution that puts the Church before God. To teach us all to take full responsibility for our actions, for our spiritual development, to own our shit, takes money and power away from religious institutions. To teach us that the spark of the sacred resides within, that all life is Sacred, takes away influence and potency from the men who run the religions. It’s in religions best interest to keep us superstitious, keep us uneducated, uninformed and foolish. There isn’t much humility in religion. In fact, there is so much hubris that Mama Nature probably blushes regularly.
