Bad Design

I think I found a bad design right at the beginning, which is the WPI’s website homepage. While it is true that the homepage looks decent with a big picture that covers 90% of the page, it doesn’t convey much information. I chose this design because I’ve tried to find information on WPI’s website numerous times but I’ve never found this homepage easy to use.

There’s a piece of white space under the picture

I think this design is viewed by anyone who wants to know about WPI or anyone who is associated with WPI to search for useful information about WPI. They use this design whenever they open up WPI’s website.

This is a bad design because it doesn’t serve the function as a main page. Most people go to a university’s website for general information, not irrelevant news. It’s not like someone will visit WPI’s website everyday to find out “what’s new?” or “what’s cool?”. We can’t tell proximity, alignment, or repetition since it has almost no text chunks. However, this page does show a clear contrast between general information and irrelevant news since the news covers up the whole page and all other useful information are hidden in the “menu” tab and aligned poorly.
