Fan of The Underdog: Heartache & Joy As A Liverpool Fan

It was a harsh defeat for Liverpool fans all over the globe as the Reds lost after 130 minutes and a penalty shoot out to Manchester City. Having lost only 4 out of 18 Penalty shot outs total, it was a very heartbreaking defeat which pretty much ruined the remainder of my day, hence the reason I am writing this two days after the fact. We have had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in recent years but it always seems as though Liverpool is an underdog.
Under former manager Brendan Rodgers, patience was a word that was commonly tossed around in Liverpool press as well as character. But I think I speak for all fans of our great club when I say we are running very low on the patience that we have had over the last few years. After coming so close to what would have been our first title in the Premier League, many fans were left frustrated at yet another close year. And it seems that even with a new and remarkable manager such as Jurgen Klopp Liverpool is still an underdog.
What hurts more than anything is knowing that we are out of contention for all competitions beside the one that at the point matters even more that the league, the Europa League.
As much as I hate losing and the agony of losing as an underdog, there are not too many better feelings than a convincing win. We have seen some high flying performances so far under Klopp and it is very encouraging. But still not enough to take my mind of our overlying inconsistencies.
Inconsistent is probably the best word to totally describe our club. We are obliterating teams at the top one weekend and dropping points to lower level team the next. We bring in promising players, only to ship them off for a profit a couple years later. These are some of the obvious differences between us and the more consistent high positioned sides.
I love my club for the passion and what we represent. It is a club that has a rich history based off of building a not only a team but a family. A family that never walks alone. And I personally enjoy being the Underdog. I’m so used to the site losses, that when we do win the emotions are uncontrollable. There is a certain type of energy that you develop when you are not always favorite to win, you have a belief that you will but there is always that little voice of doubt. It makes the game more exciting in ways. Not to say I don’t want us to WIN!
I have been a fan of Liverpool for nearly a decade and I have loved every moment of it. I know that with our new manager there is plenty of hope and a new desire for success. However only time will tell meaning we AGAIN mist have patience… It is not the easiest job in the world being a Liverpool supporter, but it is the only club that has my heart and for that I bleed Liverpool Red.
You’ll Never Walk Alone!
