Excellent question, the answer is: For the first week you guess. Yes that’s right, you guess. By the end of the first week you have a much more clear view on who you should be designing for and testing with, one week later you’re already much closer. I know this sounds insane, but it’s much less wasteful than up-front research as you’re constantly producing tangible, testable prototypes cheaply.
