Problems with mobile-tablet support for old websites and their solutions.
In last one decade, there has been exponential growth in the users of handheld devices such as mobiles and tablets, and because of this growth a whole new breed of users group came in the market who uses their mobile more often then their computers for their general work such as online shopping etc.
Now the Question is, does these devices supports these websites?
Yes, It supports, But if the website is not mobile friendly, browsers will simply zoom out the website.
Now because of small screen of the device and this zoom out, problems you might face are:
Too Small Fonts: Users will have to zoom the website to the read the content of the website.
Horizontal Scrolling: No one likes to scroll horizontally to just read the full sentence.
No ease in using menus: Its really hard to use navigation menus in this kind of websites, for any category to choose user have to go till the top of the website and then click on it.
Pop-ups: pop-up’s can really make users life miserable in that small screens.
These mobile unfriendly websites can give really pathetic web experience to the users, and sometimes that could even make users to leave your website. Surely, as a developer or a owner of the website, you don’t want that to happen.
So Now, What can we do about these problem?
Make Mobile Applications for each platform such as android, iPhone etc. :
This solution is expensive. you will need lots of helping hands to make these applications. for each platform you might need a different team.
Make a Separate Website for mobiles :
Its a good and low cost solution but Google search doesn't like website’s content scattered around. Google will find the same search for both the websites.
You won’t be able to use the feature of the base device such as accelerometer, motion sensors etc. .
Make A Pseudo Mobile Application — PhoneGap :
In this approach, people use tool-kits such as PhoneGap to create the application. Basically, this application is just a bunch of Web Pages which has some hooks though the framework to interact with base device’s features such as accelerometer, motion sensors etc. .
Make your current website Responsive to adapt to all the device possible :
In this approach, You make your current website responsive by only changing the front-end of the website, but sometimes if site is really complex you can’t simply make it responsive.
You won’t be able to use all the features of mobile such as accelerometer, motion sensors as those are not supported by mobile browsers yet.
