I really enjoyed this week’s readings too. You highlight a lot of points in these pieces that are important to consider. Particularly your point about workload and the idea that computers (or machines) can eliminate the actual work. It doesn’t get eliminated as business leaders may think it actually just shifts. I felt like Chapters 2 and 4 Slack & Wise suggested too in that they point out the interdependence and perceptions of machinery and technologies. There is perception that they (businesses)are going to speed up efficiency and maintain some mega-hyper control over the workforce but it never quite works out that way because ultimately we are drivers of the technologies, and we are flawed.
I find myself in the same situation in my job (doing several jobs non-stop), and I’m often told this is the case, “you’re doing like 4 jobs.” I use to be flattered by that remark now I’m burdened by it. I find that I push back more and more on my workload. Just because I’m capable of doing the work doesn’t mean I should be doing it all. In fact, I would say I do four jobs kind of so-so, instead of one job really well. It may feel like we’re going faster and accomplishing more work, but I think it is a facade. It’s the same amount of work, just contained in a little box on our desk instead of big elaborate setting.
