I love beginnings. Beginning of the week, beginning of the month. New season, new year. Beginnings crack the world wide open, inviting us to set intentions to chase our best self in the coming period.

This is especially true as January graces us with her presence and the Earth completes one more turn around the sun. With the end of December closing in, we all begin to reflect back on the year past and look ahead to the next 365 days (or 366 as it were, as 2020 is a leap year).

When it comes to New Years Resolutions, many people set weight loss related goals. For many, many, many years, I was one of those people. This is the first year I’m doing NaNoWriMo. Or, well, I guess I should say this is the first year I am sincerely putting in the work to do NaNoWriMo. “Giving it the old college try,” as my dad would say. In years past I’ve thought about attempting NaNoWriMo, sometimes even going so far as to make a half-hearted attempt on the first day, only to inevitably give up shortly after starting because the goal seems too insurmountable.

For those not in the know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. Writers across the globe commit to writing 50,000 words of a novel throughout the month of November. …
