Thank you for taking time to respond. This quote seems to address my question:
“ The advantage of the latter is that the path to the larger goal is made explicit, and each small step within the project is a step directly related to and consistent with the larger goal.” Which seems to indicate that the folks participating in a pilot program need to shared some common understanding of what they are participating in.

“ I also believe it would be useful if some groups approached the goal from a big-picture, systems perspective.” ~ I agree that systems perspective is necessary (& also believe that coop businesses need a reformed economic model to really accomplish their goals). I’ve had the frustrating experience of proposing a local currency which was adopted by the community, although entirely deprived of the systemic change it was meant to be based on. So, at this point I do not see “local currencies” as any type of “smaller step” without some understanding of the design intention behind it.

As i write that i’m also thinking that the smaller step the community might have needed was just the idea that they *could* print a currency.
