Automation has been happening in the programming field since the beginning. Think compilers. And the response to “This could be automated” should be to automate it, rather than worrying about your job.
In the 70s I worked with a small team of programmers which worked that way. We spent probably a quarter of our time building tools, including a Unix-like OS and a compiler that supported what would now be called object-oriented development. The result of working this way was amazing productivity, along with a set of tools which are still in use today.
