AI and the Future of Work
Utopian v. Dystopian Scenarios
In a recent Fast Company paper, futurist Frank Diana presented highly optimistic predictions concerning the potential impact of AI on jobs and employment.
Drawing parallels between the transformation period of the early 20th century and today’s technological advancements, the author argued that AI is poised to fundamentally alter the nature of work in positive, employee-centric ways.
In the new utopian future of work, AI would lead to happier and more satisfied workers by automating repetitive tasks. A realignment of work-life balance would occur with the traditional 40-hour week becoming unnecessary as workers and companies embrace flexibility and efficiency.
Furthermore, employee power would increase with government intervention ensuring ethical AI use, protection of workers’ rights and prevention of exploitation, “much like historical legislative actions that curbed big business excesses and promoted fairness”. Note: Yes the paper does state this????
The demand for new skills would create novel career opportunities blurring the distinction between white-collar and blue-collar jobs. By reducing physical labour demands, and providing upskilling opportunities for everyone, economic opportunities would be created across the board.
