It Wasn’t a Red Tide, It Was a Blue Fizzle
Jordan Bray

No, it was a perfect storm in the Electoral College: The Midwest went “red” before the South Atlantic and Southwest turned “blue”.

Hillary Clinton received more votes than Donald Trump, but that’s not what matters. Obama 2012 would have beaten Trump by 5 million votes, but still lost the Electoral College. He would have lost Pennsylvania and North Carolina by a narrower margin and Florida and Ohio by a significantly wider margin. He would have won Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan, but that wouldn’t have been enough.

In 2012, Democrats could count on the Midwest. By 2020, Florida, North Carolina, Arizona, and Georgia will be turning blue, if current trends continue. 2016 was the perfect storm.
