Birdland is proud to announce that after her record-breaking week of concerts, Chita Rivera’s portrait has been be added to the wall of the historic music room.

The photograph, by Kevin Alvey, hangs alongside the musical greats who have performed on the Birdland stage over the past 64 years, including Oscar Peterson, Michel Legrand, Dave Brubeck, Phoebe Snow, Tony Bennett, Jon Hendricks and George Shearing.

Of the honor, Rivera said, “Birdland is my favorite room. It comes with it’s own history. I look around and see so many great friends on the walls. When I come here, I just feel hip! ”

“Chita is a star — a term that applies to a very few, very special people. Ethel Merman. Mary Martin. Julie Andrews. Performers with their own aura, who in essence, carry around their own spotlight. Chita has earned her place on that exclusive list.” Hal Prince
