This was the best story I have ever read! I too am Asian/American and can very much relate to this. When I enter a room I get asked all the time “so where are you from?” They don’t believe me when I tell them the truth, I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio which is in the United States. Secondly, they are shocked to hear me talk. They don’t expect me to speak English without an accent. I have faced unappreciated stereotyping all my life. The last encounter was in a group, the speaker was talking Chinese and I was asked to translate. My response was “ I have no idea what the speaker is saying” followed by an eye roll. Your stylistics and thematic findings are remarkable. Great job!
