Yes, Black people, we need white friends

Coming from the white side of what you’re talking about I’ve often found my best avenue to a lasting friendship with a Black American is to acknowledge that I can’t ever fully understand what it is like to be a black person in this time and space. There are human commonalities, of course, but I have at times been blinded to the differences by the condescension of my liberal “understanding”. Works really well to acknowledge this inability to “fully understand” with the women in my life, as well.
