While what you said about Semmelweis is true (and he deserves our gratitude), and I subscribe wholeheartedly to the idea that “the truthfulness of a belief is not a function of the number of supporters it has,” the clear question is who is in possession of the truth; and it is not fundamentalists! They have had a free ride for centuries, but are now headed for the ditch. (Nice try, though.)

Now I will tell readers what you neglected to tell, which is who Semmelweis was. Wikipedia: “Semmelweis discovered that the incidence of puerperal fever (also known as “childbed fever”) could be drastically cut by the use of hand disinfection in obstetrical clinics.”
