I started my business with $100 — If I can do it, so can you.

Tips on how to start your own business from scratch

The truth is, I never intended to open a web design company. You can say it was an accident.

I would love to tell you my story of how I started but that wouldn’t be useful to anyone, it’s just an anecdote. My intention of writing this article is to share with you what I've learnt so far from starting up to running a web design company.

I hope that this article will inspire a lot of people to start their own business and to pursue what they set their mind to.

For those who say that they don’t have enough capital to start their own business, don’t let it determine your own fate. If I can start a business with $100, so can you.

Here are the list of things I learnt so far:

Learn how to sell

SELLING to me, is the most important skill you need to have in order to start and run a business.

It doesn’t matter if you have the skills to design website or to code. If you can’t convince a customer into buying your vision, then there is no deal.

How did I learn how to sell? I read a lot of books on the art of selling. I mean a lot. Then, I put it to practice in real life.

Rejection is normal

The truth is, no one likes to be rejected.

One of the first things you will experience when you first start a web design company or any business in general is that, you will experience rejection.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve been rejected by clients and how much money we missed out on. In hindsight, it was precisely because of those rejections that helped drive me toward success. You may ask how?

You learn from your mistakes. Namely, your flaws and areas you need to improve on. Rejections make us look back on what went wrong and how we could do a better job next time.

Always hire someone who is smarter and more experienced than you

This is one of the mistakes that we made from the get-go, we hired a fresh graduate as our first employee (mostly because the salary wasn’t so high and we wanted to save money) and….it didn’t go so well.

We ended up hiring an experienced person in the field a few months later. It was one of the best business decisions we have ever made. He was able to guide us on what we should and should not do, in order to head in the right direction.

“Life is a lot easier if you hire an experienced person to be your mentor”

When you first start a business, you should always hire someone who is smarter and more experienced than you. Not only will your work be delivered at a faster rate than an inexperienced person, but you will also gain useful insights that could help you make better decisions down the road.

Don’t be afraid to fail

The first business I started failed, miserably. At that time, I was not sad whatsoever, but I was mad.

Mad at whom?

Myself.

If I could go back in time, I would have researched the business more extensively before starting one. It did not stopped me from starting another business though.

Remember that it doesn’t matter how many times you fail, you only have to be right once.

Stranger danger — nope!

One of the things that I found really helpful when I needed advice was to reach out to strangers, by strangers I mean people who are professionals and skilled in the area of your interest.

But they are strangers, though!

It doesn’t matter. Cold email or cold call the person and talk nicely. You’d be surprised that most of the time people are kind enough to give you some advice on what you wanted to know — don’t be afraid and try it out!

Make connections before you need those connections

One of the reasons why I was able to start a web design company was because of my connections. People in my social circle were my first few clients, they are also the easiest people to work with when you first start off!

If you do a good job with your first few clients, there is a high chance that they will recommend you new clients. The same can be applied to other industries, so go out and meet people!

Last words

Honestly, I never imagined that I would be able to start a business with just $100. It’s too little! Nope.

I only needed to buy a hosting service and a domain name to kick start the business.
