Getting to know your new neighbors can be an intimidating experience, especially if you’re not an extrovert. However, it can be as simple as holding a block party or making a wave. Here are some tips to help you get to know your new neighbors in your new neighborhood.

Be Friendly

Make eye contact and wave hello whenever you see your neighbor. Doing so shows people that you are open to getting to know them and making them feel like they are part of the community. One of the most critical steps in becoming friends with your neighbors is to start a casual exchange.

Introduce Yourself

This may seem like an awkward exchange, but it shouldn’t be too hard if you’ve already had some positive interactions. Head to your neighbor’s house or across the street and introduce yourself. It’s essential to be sensitive when it comes to the timing of your interactions with your neighbors. For instance, if you’re planning on visiting your new neighbor, avoid showing up at dinner time.

Ask for Recommendations

One of the easiest ways to get to know your neighbors is by asking them for their advice. For instance, if you’re planning on hiring a landscaping company, you can ask your neighbor who they use. Even if your neighbor doesn’t know where to get a good pizza, you can introduce yourself and have a conversation.

Another way to get to know your neighbors is by asking for help. For instance, if you cannot find your screwdriver on the move, you can ask your neighbor for a loan. In the same condition as the one you received, return it the next day.

Offer Assistance

After settling in, start looking for opportunities to be friendly with your neighbors. For instance, if you see a baby’s birth announcement in a nearby yard, make a gift for the new mother. If you see someone working on their car, ask them what’s wrong and ask if you can help.

If your neighbor is having difficulty getting groceries in order, you can help them out. Doing so will give you a chance to make a positive impression and show them how much you care.

Get Involved in Neighborhood Meetings

Get involved if you’re a new resident in a neighborhood with a homeowners association or a community watch. You can also attend block parties, meetings, and gatherings next door. Having the opportunity to interact with your neighbors more often will allow you to make a positive impression.

If you’re an introvert, attending these gatherings may be the best way to meet your neighbors. Since other people in attendance are also trying to get to know their neighbors, you can easily slide away if you start feeling nervous.

Although building a solid relationship with your new neighbors can take a while, you can reap the rewards of your efforts in no time.
