It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” Charles Darwin. This Darwin’s quote has been one of my major driving force in Life. Indeed, no one can grow quickly in life if one is not adaptable, no one can acquire knowledge in many areas of life if one is not adaptable, no one can live in different areas of the world if one is not adaptable and in all, no one can succeed in different aspect of life if one is not adaptable. This aforementioned characteristics have been bonds that i hold on to in any situation I found myself.

Having said all that, I want talk about how I have been adapting to changes in Andela Bootcamp. There have been many changing activities going on in Andela Bootcamp so far. Some of which are:

  • Learning new things as fast as possible. For example, I’m unaware of anything like Sequelize Object Relational Mapper before which i had to learn within some hours.
  • Learning new ideas as fast as possible. For example, I do use Github, but in the way I like. Now, I have to learn the idea of how to use it to work in a team and the associated ways of doing it.
  • Using different technologies which are alien to you. for example, while I always wrote programs and pushed them to Github, I had no idea there were technologies like Travis and Coverall that can be integrated into github repository to test program online and also give coverage of how healthy the program is.
  • Following convention even if you are already using your ideas in that area. This is one area I have to really get adapted to. Normally, I made my Git commit anyhow I like and in any file but I was made to follow a convention. Especially, the Atomic commit.
  • Working collaboratively even if you are a type that likes to work alone.
  • Work perfectly without supervision. Something I hardly do. For example, I hardly overlook a task when working alone but at Andela Bootcamp, I have been made to work well and carefully with or without supervision.
  • Following a pattern even if you can chose your own away. For example, I normally pushed to Git any how. Especially to the master branch of the project until I was made to understand that the master branch is a sacred branch. That I should follow Github workflow that involves pushing to another branch first and later merge the branch to master branch when the project is completed or a version of it is completed.

There are so many changes I have witnessed in Andela Bootcamp which adapting to them has really given me so many experience. Some of these experience are:

  • To learn faster under intense pressure which is helpful in a case of urgency.
  • To deliver work on or before a particular deadline.
  • To collaborate in a team. Something that is really improving my skills in programming.
  • To ask when you don’t know. Asking my BFA questions and with prompt replies have helped me learned faster than if I were to knock my head around to know it.
  • To write clean code. I hardly lint my code. Now, adapting to using Eslint to lint my code is really helping me in writing clean codes.
  • To write testable and maintainable code. Adapting to writing a testable code is something that is getting me really happy as it allows me to write code with less bugs.

Finally, the challenges I’m facing in Andela Bootcamp and how I’m getting adaptable to them is really helping me to get better. I have also come to agree that challenges one faces in life are what give one experience when one get adaptable to them.
