Assessment 3A: Sound/Ambience

John Cage ( Born on 5 September 1912), one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. John Cage was famous not for his musical talent, it was his notional ideas. One of his illustrious work is named “4'33” it was performed it in the absolute silence, he was sitting on a chair right next to a piano while doing weird thing. For my point of view, it is not about the musical art, it is a conceptually work.

“There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot.” ― John Cage

First of all, I need to understand my research, understand what is it about. He draw a vertical lines, curve lines, vertical line and dots that spread across the plastic to interpretation in a piece of paper on his works.

Fontana Mix by John cage

For my project, I tried to show that silence is a type of music. I have recorded the sounds from the UTS library level 4. I took the sound on 5:45 pm around, there is only a few people on the level 4. I was drawing the way just like John cage. But I only used single line, curve and point in a music staff style. I was hitting the table 4 times in every 10 sec because it was too quite. So it like became a rhythm. curves mean the taps what I was just hit, single line mean the silence, point mean the end of the taps.
